You’re welcome, we think…
I’ve been desperately searching for something positive about my state that doesn’t mention the weather, and I just stumbled upon it. By my estimation, it appears as though Arizona voters have had a positive effect on the nation as a whole. Consider this:
John McCain comes out as the leading conservative against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” offering impassioned pleas on the floor of the Senate. Despite the old curmudgeon, Obama will be presented with the repeal today.
Last night, Democrats were able to marshal eleven (11) (10+1) Republican votes to end the GOP filibuster on the START nuclear arms reduction treaty, headed by none other than Arizona’s Junior Senator Jon “is that egg all over my face” Kyl. That’s right, the original busy-bee had his legs swept out from under him by the likes of Lamar Alexander, Scott Brown, and that derned Lisa Murkowski. The Senate plans to vote on ratification later this week.
I’d like to think these Republican defections stem from the lunacy of an old bigot and a man who politicized national security, but I’d truly hope that politicians are waking up to the inanity taking place in Arizona. Voters here just handed the GOP a super-majority in the state legislature and swept a Republican into each state executive position despite said party playing a major role in record budget deficits (don’t get me started on the denial of transplants to AHCCCS recipients). These same voters set forth the Senate delegation being roundly rejected in the lame duck session. Perhaps the Senate realizes those from Arizona shouldn’t be orchestrating key policy items for the United States as a whole?
BeTWIXt Us
At our next stop in old Halloween candy land, we realize that two isn’t always better than one when it comes to stale fun-pack Twix…
Fruit Chew On This
Halloween has passed, and like every early November, old candy sits around to gnaw on once boredom strikes. My current residence is inhabited with a bottomless bowl of Starburst in the two-pack/fun size. Everyday I grab a pack on the way to work and I’ve made a startling discovery: the colors I draw have a tremendous influence on how my day will unfold.
Take for instance yesterday, whilst putting the finishing touches on an awful waking process, I discovered that I had indeed stumbled upon the infamous orange-lemon combo. It is not enough to pull one stale orange nub of a fruit chew? You have to follow it up with lemon? I should have packed it in right there and gone back to bed. Needless to say the day was an utter nightmare. I was so scared this morning to stumble upon another day-ruining awful color combo…
But hey, wouldn’t you know, a double red. And then just now, at 12:30 p.m., a red-pink duo of delicious. I should have gone to Vegas.
Week 10 Already?
I’d like to thank Ross for the opportunity to talk a little football on the Daily Ross once a week or so, and possibly a couple more posts on trending national, Nevada, or great State of Arizona politics (like you care). Look at this this flag. Come on, you know you’re interested.
November is here, and you’ll start hearing the phrase “must-win” quite often when it comes to your favorite (and unfavorite, though by all accounts its over in Big D) football teams. Week 10 brings us some nice divisional matchups, starting with Green Bay heading to Chicago early Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, I’ll be heading to the Nest to watch Big Red take on the Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals are currently 3-5 and things look bleak, but a weak second-half schedule and the worst division in football could be the recipe for another end-around into the playoffs. Sunday night we get to see a possible preview of the AFC Championship where the Pats take on the Steelers, and Monday night Philly heads to Washington, so hopefully we’ll get some competitive games.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank Ross for transforming my internet viewing period into Uncrate time. This site is ridiculously addictive. Like Ross, I’ve prospectively spent my next paycheck.
New Regular Blogger: Kellen Marlow
Kellen Marlow, a former classmate of mine has agreed to come on board with a regular column. You will find it under the “Desert Scroll” tab above. Expect anything from Arizona Politics (he’s a big fan of Jan Brewer) to NFL (is the nest still worth protecting?). When my blog was over on blogspot, I wrote a profile of him. Here it is:
“Kellen Rae Marlow is a man with his heart in Arizona and a degree from Colorado. He’s 24, single, Roman Catholic and an Independent. His hometown is Cave Creek, Arizona. After earning a political science degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, he found his way into the halls of Willamette. Prior work experience includes being a caddie and server and a clerk. When he’s a home in northeast Salem, the ever amusing Noel Kersey is his roommate. He gets around Salem in his 2004 Honda Accord and his feet. Golf, Frisbee and team roping keep him sane. He also likes to watch sports, drink, get yelled at, and play XBOX (usually at my place).
He came to law school to get a J.D. and meet the author of The Daily Ross; getting into law school has been his biggest achievement. His favorite 1L class was Constitutional Law I and his current career interest in estate planning. According to Marlow, law school is “enjoyable, better than working.” He’s involved with the Western Golf Association and Moot Court.

Doesn’t Really Matter
Those lucky few who tuned into the Arizona Gubernatorial Debate last night got a real treat. As you’ve no doubt seen on Hardball, Rachel Maddow, and The Situation Room, Governor Jan Brewer laid an egg in her opening remarks. The egg I speak of is a governor so pleased with herself in a well executed snipe at her colleagues (“I’m so happy to be here with Larry, Barry, and Terry”) that she effectively forgot the rest of her remarks, amounting to a mouthed exclamation of “S***” and 13 (some say 16) seconds of silence in the 60 seconds she was given. Video Here.
Brewer would go on to make further mockery of the highest post in Arizona, including repeated statements that she has brought thousands of jobs to Arizona in her term as governor when in fact Arizona has seen a 128,000 jobs leave the state. Couple that with a repeated sidestep of questions regarding her allegations of beheadings in the Arizona desert, including a post debate cold shoulder to reporters seen here, and any reasonable person would think Brewer’s days as governor are numbered. Oh, but you reasonable people would be underestimating Arizona voters, ahem, campaign strategy.
You see, Brewer knows now like she knew then that Terry Goddard, or any random 4th grader, would embarrass her in a debate on the issues. That’s why she agreed to this debate so close to the primary she handily won on August 24 and so far from the general election, now just over 8 weeks away. The governor has this period of time to nurse her 20 percentage point lead in the polls, which no doubt took a hit last night, and let her media machine operate on Goddard’s record (actually rather impeccable) and Arizona citizen’s unfounded fear of illegal immigrants.
Sadly for us, this appears to be the only debate we’ll see between these two candidates. Brewer wisely rescinded her agreement to debate Goddard in two weeks, stating that the candidates’ decades of public service outline their positions on the issues.
